Requirements

  • macOS 26 or later.
  • Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer).
  • Interface in English and Portuguese.

Granting permissions

On first launch, the setup assistant walks you through each permission. Afterwards, the Permissions section of the preferences (Preferences… in the Old Habits menu, General tab) shows the state of each one, with a button that opens the right place in System Settings. To do it by hand:

Accessibility — required for Snap, the Switcher, the Dock and direct paste

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
  2. Turn on Old Habits. If it isn’t listed, click +, choose Old Habits in Applications and turn it on.

Screen Recording — optional, only for window thumbnails

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording.
  2. Turn on Old Habits. If macOS asks, quit and reopen the app.

Full Disk Access — optional, only for the Trash in Old Habits Explorer

  1. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access.
  2. Turn on Old Habits Explorer (or add it with +) and go back to Explorer.

Turned it on and nothing changed? Remove the app from the list with −, add it again with + and reopen Old Habits. That usually fixes it after an update.

Frequently asked questions

How do the trial and the purchase work?

Old Habits will be sold directly on this website, as a one-time purchase — not a subscription, no recurring charge — in two products: Individual, for 1 Mac, and Multi, for up to 3 Macs at the same time. The download is free. As planned, on first use the app asks for your email and the code you received by email — the email has a button that opens the app already filled in. The trial code, free and valid for 14 days, is requested with your email on this website and needs the internet to activate. The purchase code arrives by email after payment, at the address used for the purchase, and must be used within 30 days; it is accepted even without the internet, and activation happens on its own when there is a connection, within 7 days. Once activated, the app works without the internet, and a purchased license has no expiry. The trial and sales are not open yet; the price appears at checkout, at launch.

I got a new Mac. How do I move the license?

As planned, release the old Mac’s slot: with Deactivate this Mac, in the app itself, or on this website’s Manage license page — you enter the purchase email, get an access link with no password, see your activated Macs by model (for example, “MacBook Air”) and date and use Release; the slot is freed right away. There are up to 3 releases per year per license. If you went past that limit or lost access to the purchase email, write to suporte@oldhabits.app.

I lost my code, or the app says “invalid code”

Check that the email you typed is the one that received the code — or use the button in the email, which fills in both. If that doesn’t help, or if you lost the code, write to suporte@oldhabits.app from the email used for the request or the purchase.

How does Old Habits update?

Through the app itself. In the Updates tab of the preferences, Install updates automatically has new versions downloaded and installed on their own; with it off, the app lets you know and you install with Install Now. Check for Updates Now checks right away. Installation waits while Paint has unsaved work or Explorer has a file operation in progress.

Shortcuts or Snap don’t respond.

It’s almost always the Accessibility permission. Check it under Permissions in the preferences and follow the steps above. If a shortcut clashes with another app, re-record it in the Shortcuts tab.

Thumbnails only show an icon and a title.

The Screen Recording permission is missing. It’s optional: without it, the Switcher and the Dock show each window’s icon and title.

Uninstalling

  1. If you use Energy with Don’t sleep, first choose Sleep or turn the module off: that removes the system helper.
  2. In the Old Habits menu, choose Quit Old Habits, and also quit Old Habits Explorer, Paint and Notes if they are open. On quitting, the suite gives back macOS’s own window tiling, which stays off while Snap is on.
  3. Drag Old Habits from Applications to the Trash, along with the Applications › Old Habits folder, where the suite installs Old Habits Explorer, Paint and Notes. If your user couldn’t write to Applications, that folder is in the Applications folder inside your home folder.
  4. To also delete Old Habits Notes drafts, delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Old Habits folder.
  5. If you like, remove Old Habits from the lists in System Settings › Privacy & Security (Accessibility, Screen & System Audio Recording, Full Disk Access) by selecting it and clicking −.

If, after deleting the app, the Mac still doesn’t sleep when you close the lid, run sudo pmset -a disablesleep 0 in Terminal. Uninstalling doesn’t cancel your license: you can install again whenever you want.

Reporting a problem

The more of these your message to suporte@oldhabits.app includes, the faster we can understand the case:

  • the Old Habits version (at the top of the Preferences… window, opened from the app’s menu);
  • the macOS version and Mac model (Apple menu › About This Mac);
  • which tool: Old Habits Explorer, Paint or Notes, Snap, Switcher, Dock thumbnails or the clipboard;
  • the steps that make the problem happen, what you expected and what happened;
  • whether the permissions show as granted under Permissions in the preferences;
  • a screenshot or short video, if it helps;
  • if the app quit unexpectedly, the text of the report macOS shows.

Before attaching, check that the image or report shows no password, document or personal content that doesn’t need to go along.
